Alexander ‘Finn’ Gilbert was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1986. His family soon moved away after a year and ended up in Calvert County, Maryland where he was raised. As a kid, he always had a camera in his hand.Documenting the mundane to the insane. Later in life, he would go back to school at College of Southern Maryland where he started with Graphic Design but quickly went to the field of Photography. After his community college days were done he studied under Kyohei Abe and Jenee Mateer at Towson University where he got his Bachelors in Arts and Science with a concentration in Photo Imaging. A year after graduating TU, he jumped at the opportunity to study under Bill Gaskins at Maryland Institute College of Art in the Photography + Media and Society program.
Identity was the main theme of Finn’s early work. When coming back to school he struggled with his own identity. He questioned everything of his own personality. The loss of identity is ‘something everyone struggles with at some point in time’ he says in his artist statement for (I)dentity. He told a story of a time in his life where he felt he had to hide his sexuality. The story was told through long exposures, consisting of two individuals wrapped in string lights, moving through the space as if it was a dance. The lights shined different colors to convey the emotions that were felt this during this particular time in his life. But he will never tell you it is him at first in the images, no he makes them appear anonymous as to help others relate and see themselves. (I)dentity and (E)motion had two effects on Finn. The first would start his research portion of his practice and the second started to reignite his passion for activism.
Finn's current work titled ‘What Am I Going To Do,’ combines story telling, portraiture, and activism to shed a light on the careless healthcare system. When Finn speaks on this topic, he talks with passion and fire. He can quote statistics, tell you the wait times to see a Primary Care Doctor in some major cities, and so much more information. He believes he can change the system. Finn’s all too familiar call to action starts with this question, “What are you going to do?”

When Finn is finally taking a rest from his art or work, he is usually found curled up in his bed while his cat Ariel snuggles next to him. He uses that time to recharge his batteries and to watch “dumb” as he says, Youtube videos.
